ABOUT : Peta McSharry

Peta trained at the London School of Sports Massage (LSSM), founded in 1989, it was the first school to provide specialist training in Sport & Remedial Massage. It has remained a pioneer and leader in the field of massage and has done much to establish what has now become a well-recognised discipline in modern healthcare.

Sports has played a large part in Peta's world, from an early age she has participated in many different sports, finally settling on cycling as both transport and challenge. The advantage of playing so many different sports when offering sports massage is the ability to empathise with how the body feels post sports, along with a better understanding of the biomechanics of different sports. Peta's aim when treating her sporting clients, is to get them back training as soon as possible if injury is their issue. If no injuries exist then maintenance is a key component in keeping muscles working to their full potential.

Peta's working world took a slight detour through the corporate world, where being desk-bound and working to someone else's schedule didn't match the energy and independence Peta has. Fortuitously Peta happened upon Sports Massage, it was like someone switched a light on. Does it seem ironic that Peta now works onsite at two of the UKs largest corporations, empathising, sympathising and sighing with relief.

Qualifications and associations

Peta obtained her diploma in Sports & Remedial Massage in 2004 starting a good foundation on which to continue learning. She went on to study a program in myofascial release, based on the teachings of Ida Rolf and taught by renowned Osteopath and GB sprinter Alex Fugallo. She recently attended a two day course with Thomas Myers who studied directly with Ida Rolf and challenges current thinking on the body and offers thought provoking ideas in bodywork.

The LSSM diploma has become the benchmark for quality training in this sector of Complementary Healthcare. Training includes advanced remedial massage techniques and assessment skills which enable the therapist to work safely and effectively with people from all walks of life, in a wide range of situations. The diploma is externally validated by Edexcel/BTEC which is the national awarding body for vocational education and training (it is equivalent to NVQ Level 4).

Peta is a member of the Institute of Sports and Remedial Massage (ISRM), which represents the professional interests of Sport & Remedial Massage Therapists. It is on the General Council of Massage Therapy, which is working with the Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health to establish the new federal structure for the self regulation of complementary healthcare in the UK and across Europe.

Experience

Peta has had the good fortune to work at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Saracens Rugby & Football Club and Middlesex County Cricket Club. But the best experience she has is working with clients everyday, each person presents a challenge for learning. Some have presented a bigger challenge and these are documented as case studies.
